The Challenge

Affectionately known as “The Cake Tin,” this family beach house had been passed down for generations — but it had seen better days. The floor was completely gone, the walls were barely standing, and it was truly falling apart. The owners had held onto it with the hope of giving it new life someday, and that time had finally come.

Our Approach

In a joint effort with my builder husband (JGB Projects), we created a plan to completely rebuild the structure while preserving its original footprint due to strict permit limitations. One quirky result: the bathroom access had to remain external, which added to the beachy, adventure-filled charm of the home. We kept the design natural and minimalist to honor the client’s vision and the environment around it. Dress ply with a negative detail was used for the walls — a subtle yet stylish touch that brought texture and warmth to the space.

The Transformation

Though small in scale, this project was mighty in impact. The new home is simple, practical, and full of heart — with a layout that embraces the breath-taking ocean views right in front of it. A beautifully curved access bridge was constructed to weave through the tree’s on the property, turning the approach to the home into a magical experience.
